How can Försäkringskassan simplify information for logged-in parents?

Introduction

This case was part of a collaboration between Försäkringskassan and our place of learning.

The brief

Our goal was to simplify information for logged-in parents and expecting parents, making content clearer and easier to navigate.

Understanding the challenge

Försäkringskassan challenged us to improve how they address key user needs based on a comprehensive analysis. 

 

This included clarifying responsibilities for VAB (care of sick children), streamlining parental leave management, and simplifying the application process for parental benefits and VAB.

Their core question for us:


"How can we clearly present information about parental leave days and VAB-days to logged-in parents and expecting parents?"

Research

To better understand our users, we combined quantitative and qualitative methods. We launched an online survey that gathered insights from 60 parents, helping us identify key needs. 

 

To go deeper, we conducted nine in-depth interviews, uncovering personal experiences and pain points.

From this research, two key hypotheses emerged:

Key take aways from research and  interviews

​Simplifying information will empower expecting parents, increasing their confidence and understanding of parental benefits.
A clearer user flow, from “My Pages” to the VAB process, will make applications easier, faster, and more memorable.

Design

Following three design iterations and two rounds of user testing, we delivered a high-fidelity prototype to Försäkringskassan featuring:

  • An interactive VAB calendar for simple logging and applications

  • A dashboard overview of registered children, VAB days, and parental benefit stats

  • Revamped categories and button-based navigation for smoother user flow

  • A checklist and guide tailored for expecting parents

Outcome

The feedback from Försäkringskassan was highly positive, and we’re confident this concept will enhance the platform’s usability for parents navigating key services.
